Oberammergau Passion Play

In 1963, the townspeople of Oberammergau, Germany, vowed to God that they would perform the Passion of Christ every decade if He saved them from the plague that was ravaging the land. They were spared and have upheld their vow ever since, with the 42nd production being held in 2020. The Oberammergau Passion Play will be the highlight of our tour, but you'll also explore Rothenburg ob der Tauber, walk through the Marienplatz in Munich, visit palaces and Hitler's Eagle's Nest, and be immersed in The Sound of Music in Salzburg!

Our journey begins as we board our international flight to Frankfurt, Germany.

Note: The airport location and airline will be confirmed approximately 9 months before departure.

Upon our arrival in Frankfurt, we will be met by our driver and coach and depart for the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A local guide will meet us in this medieval, walled gem on the Romantic Road and lead our group on a walking tour that will transport us back 500 years as we stroll past half-timbered buildings and through narrow, winding cobblestone streets. Along the way, we will see the clock tower that depicts the wager between the mayor and the besieging General Tilly that spared the town from destruction during the Thirty Years War. Legend has it that the mayor drank over three liters of wine without stopping in order to save the town! The highlight of our tour will be a stop at St. Jakob's Church to see the “Holy Blood Altar,” which contains a small sample of Christ’s blood. Our day comes to an end with a delicious welcome dinner this evening.

(Dinner included)

Today’s destination is Munich, Bavaria’s friendly capital city. We will enjoy a walking tour of the Marienplatz with the world-famous Glockenspiel, visit the Frauenkirche with its “Devil’s Footprint,” and climb the spiral staircase of the tower of St. Peterskirche, the oldest church in Munich. Next, we’ll see the tomb of King Ludwig II in St. Michaelskirche before taking time to enjoy the smells and tastes of the city. We will have some free time to explore on our own before coming back together for dinner as a group.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

We say goodbye to Munich this morning as we make our way to Oberammergau, with a stop to tour Linderhof Palace along the way. Nestled in the Bavarian countryside, Linderhof was modeled after the Palace of Versailles and was the favorite of King Ludwig II's three castles. The castle has a beautiful collection of vases and every room contains four pounds of gold leaf! Following our tour, we will visit the beautiful Benedictine monastery in Ettal before continuing on to our Oberammergau hotel for the next two nights.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

Enjoy a relaxing morning in Oberammergau. Admire the bright frescoes that adorn many of the homes and businesses and perhaps do some shopping for a souvenir woodcarving for which the village is famous. This afternoon, we will attend Part One of the Passion Play! In 1633, the plague raged in many parts of Europe, including Oberammergau. Villagers promised to perform the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ every ten years if no one else died of the plague. The villagers were answered by God and held the first Passion Play in 1634, and the community has kept its promise for nearly 400 years! After dinner, we will return to the theater for Part Two of the play.

(Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Following breakfast, we will continue on to Austria. Along the way, we’ll stop in Prien to board a ferry boat for the short ride to Herrenchiemsee Island to visit another of King Ludwig II’s castles. A scenic 20-minute walk on the island will lead us to the breathtaking gardens of Herrenchiemsee Palace, which was modeled after the Palace of Versailles on a smaller and more intimate scale. We’ll then continue to Oberndorf, Austria, to see the Silent Night Chapel. It was here that Fr. Josef Mohr and Franz Gruber performed their composition of the world-famous hymn for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1818. Our day’s journey comes to an end in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the city of The Sound of Music.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

After breakfast this morning, we will head across the German border to nearby Berchtesgaden, one of the most scenic areas in Germany. We’ll drive partway up the Kehlstein mountain to an elevator that will take us the rest of the way to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. This Third Reich-era building was a foreboding mountaintop retreat used by Hitler during WWII. Then we will drive to the small town of Hallein for a fun, educational, and memorable adventure! Hallein was once a salt mining site, and we will don our mining garb and slide down into the earth to learn about this important industry that made the area prosperous. Once back above ground, we will return to our hotel in Salzburg for an evening at leisure.

(Breakfast included)

We rise early this morning for a guided tour of Salzburg, including the Salzburg Cathedral, St. Peter's Church, the Mirabell Gardens, Mozart's birth house, and sites from The Sound of Music. The remainder of the day is at your leisure in the Getreidegasse, Salzburg's beautiful pedestrian shopping area. Consider riding the funicular to the Salzburg fortress, which looks down over the beautiful city. After a full day of touring, a very special farewell dinner experience is in store for us this evening!

(Breakfast & dinner included)

We transfer to the airport for our flight home with memories of opulent palaces, scenic alpine views, and the inspiring Passion Play.
