Oberammergau Passion Play

In 1633, the townspeople of Oberammergau, Germany, vowed to God that they would perform the Passion of Christ every decade if He saved them from the plague that was ravaging the land. Itinerary

Our journey begins as we board our international flight to Zurich, Switzerland.

Note: The airport location and airline will be confirmed no sooner than 9 months before departure.

Upon arrival in Zurich, we will be met by our guide and coach to begin our exciting alpine adventure by driving south to the city of Lucerne, located on the shores of the magnificent Lake Lucerne. Here, we will stop at the famous wooden Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument designed by the Danish sculptor Thorwaldsen as a memorial to Swiss mercenaries that lost their lives defending the King of France. Free time will be available to stroll through the shops in the Old Town of Lucerne before our group gathers for a delicious welcome dinner.

(Dinner included)

After breakfast this morning, we will embark on a wonderful day of sightseeing, beginning with a short drive over the Brünig Pass, past Interlaken, and up a narrow valley to Lauterbrunnen, known as “the village of waterfalls.” It is here where we will board a cogwheel train for the journey to the Kleine Scheidegg rail station to take in the panoramic view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau Mountains! At 7,000 feet above sea level, enjoy some free time to hike the gentle paths in the area or simply sit and take in the amazing view! We then continue our train ride down the mountain to the charming village of Grindelwald before returning to Lucerne via Brünig Pass for a traditional Swiss folklore dinner and show.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

We say goodbye to Switzerland this morning as we make our way to Oberammergau, with a stop to tour Linderhof Palace along the way. Nestled in the Bavarian countryside, Linderhof was modeled after the Palace of Versailles and was the favorite of King Ludwig II's three castles. The castle has a beautiful collection of vases and every room contains four pounds of gold leaf! Following our tour, we will visit the beautiful Benedictine monastery in Ettal before continuing on to our Oberammergau hotel for the next two nights.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

Enjoy a relaxing morning in Oberammergau. Admire the bright frescoes that adorn many of the homes and businesses and perhaps do some shopping for a souvenir woodcarving for which the village is famous. This afternoon, we will attend Part One of the Passion Play! In 1633, the plague raged in many parts of Europe, including Oberammergau. Villagers promised to perform the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ every ten years if no one else died of the plague. The villagers were answered by God and held the first Passion Play in 1634, and the community has kept its promise for nearly 400 years! After dinner, we will return to the theater for Part Two of the play.

(Breakfast, lunch, & dinner included)

Today’s destination is Munich, Bavaria’s friendly capital city. We will enjoy a walking tour of the Marienplatz with the world-famous Glockenspiel, visit the Frauenkirche with its “Devil’s Footprint,” and climb the spiral staircase of the tower of St. Peterskirche, the oldest church in Munich. Next, we’ll see the tomb of King Ludwig II in St. Michaelskirche before exploring the Viktualien Market. This 240,000-square-foot market has 140 stalls and shops offering flowers, exotic fruit, meats, spices, cheese, wine, tea, and more. We are in for a real treat for lunch as we dine at the famous Hofbraühaus. Locals and tourists from around the world flock to this bustling beer hall where the main area holds up to 1,300 guests. It’s a tradition for regulars to have a long-standing table reservation (the oldest regulars’ table has been held for the last 70 years!), and they can even rent lockers to hold their personal beer mugs. It is sure to be an authentic Bavarian experience! The remainder of the day is at your leisure to explore the area around the hotel.

(Breakfast & lunch included)

Following breakfast, we will visit the BMW Welt, learn about the state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and production technologies at the BMW Group Plant, and explore the BMW Museum. The seven exhibition houses of the museum offer an in-depth look at the past, present, and future of the BMW brand. Turning from cutting-edge technology to the fine arts, we will take a backstage tour of the Bavarian National Theater. The afternoon is yours to explore on your own before we gather together for dinner as a group.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

We continue our journey today as we depart Munich and head toward Salzburg, with a stop to see the Silent Night Chapel along the way. It was here that Fr. Josef Mohr and Franz Gruber performed their composition of the world-famous hymn for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1818. Upon arrival in Salzburg, our local guide will introduce us to the city. We will see the beautiful Mirabell Gardens and perhaps sing a note or two on the “Do Re Mi” steps that served as the setting for that famous musical scene in The Sound of Music. We’ll also stroll along the Getreidegasse, known as Salzburg’s most famous shopping street; see the home where Mozart was born; and stand in awe of many other wonderful historic sites.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

Following breakfast, we will drive to the small town of Hallein for a fun, educational, and memorable adventure! Hallein was once a salt mining site, and we will don our mining garb and slide down into the earth to learn about this important industry that made the area prosperous. Once back above ground, the remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure in Salzburg. With a wide variety of sights to see and shops to browse, there’s plenty to keep you entertained! Consider riding the funicular to the Salzburg fortress, which looks down over the beautiful city.

(Breakfast & dinner included)

This morning, we will head across the German border to the nearby Berchtesgaden resort area to tour Hitler's Eagle's Nest. This Third Reich-era building was a foreboding mountaintop retreat used by Hitler during WWII. During our time in the resort area, we will experience a fascinating and educational schnapps demonstration and tasting before returning to Salzburg for a very special farewell dinner experience!

(Breakfast & dinner included)

We transfer to the airport for our flight home with memories of opulent palaces, scenic alpine views, and the inspiring Passion Play.
